Getting started
How does the free trial work?
Sign in to the app and you get 7 days of Pro, no card needed. After that, choose monthly or yearly to keep using it.
What do I need to run it?
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit (x64). Administrator rights to install and update the tunnel service. Microsoft Edge WebView2 (built into Windows 11; the installer adds it on Windows 10). There's no app for Mac, Linux, iPhone or Android. Consoles connect through your PC, a router or Smart DNS, all set up in the Windows app.
Where do I get the app?
It isn't released yet. When it is, the installer will be on the download page.
How do I sign in?
With your email address, Discord or Google. Email sign-in sends you a 6-digit code, so there's no password to remember. Your first sign-in creates your account and starts the free trial.
Which games does it work with?
Online games on your PC. You don't set up games one by one: you pick the server region the game connects to, and games hosted there take that route. By default only traffic to the big game hosts in that region (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Valve) goes through the relay. If a game uses a host outside those, switch to All traffic in the app under Settings > Network > Traffic mode.
Why use a VPN for gaming?
Lagvolt connects your PC to our relays over WireGuard, so game servers see a Lagvolt IP address instead of your home one. By default only traffic to the big game hosts goes through it, so everything else stays on your normal connection. Switch to All traffic to send everything through it, which also keeps your home address from other players in peer-to-peer lobbies. It's built for games, not for streaming services or anonymity.
Connection and ping
Will Lagvolt lower my ping?
Sometimes, but that isn't what it's for. Lagvolt changes the address game servers see, not the distance to them. Ping comes down to that distance and the route your internet provider takes. On an indirect or congested route a relay can be steadier; on a good one, expect about the same ping or a few milliseconds more. The app shows your ping live, with and without Lagvolt.
Which server region should I pick?
The one your game's servers are in, which isn't always the one closest to you. If the game lets you choose a server region, pick the same one in Lagvolt. Lagvolt then finds the fastest relay for it, or you can choose a relay yourself.
How do I know it's working?
The Connect screen says Connected and names the relay you're on and the IP address game servers see, with live ping, jitter and packet loss next to your direct ping.
Why is my ping higher when connected?
Your internet provider may already have a short route to that game server. Check that the server region matches where the game's servers are, then try another relay, or Fastest to let Lagvolt choose. A few milliseconds more is normal for any VPN, because your traffic makes a stop at the relay.
What's the difference between Game only and All traffic?
Game only, the default, sends traffic to the big game hosts (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Valve) for your server region through the relay. Most other traffic stays on your normal connection. All traffic sends everything on the PC through the relay. Change it in Settings > Network > Traffic mode.
Consoles
Does it work on PS5, Xbox and Switch?
Yes, with a Windows PC to set it up. Share the PC's Lagvolt connection over a network cable or its hotspot, or run Lagvolt on a supported router so the PC can be off. Smart DNS also lets the PC be off once it's set up: for supported games it can move matchmaking to the region you pick, but game traffic still goes direct.
Which consoles are supported?
PlayStation 5 (original, Slim and Pro), Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch (original, OLED and Lite).
Does Smart DNS send game traffic through Lagvolt?
No. For supported games it can move matchmaking and game services to the server region you pick, but your game traffic still takes your normal route. To send a console's game traffic through Lagvolt, share your PC's connection or use a router.
Can I get Open NAT on my console?
Not yet. Lagvolt can't forward ports to a console yet, so it can't give a console Open NAT. Smart DNS doesn't change NAT.
Does my PC have to stay on?
With a cable or the PC's hotspot, yes: the console uses your PC's Lagvolt connection, so the PC has to be connected. A router or Smart DNS keeps working with the PC off, once you've set it up in the app on your PC.
Which routers work?
Routers with a WireGuard client, such as GL.iNet, ASUS (VPN Fusion) and OpenWrt. The app saves a config file for the router to import. A router counts toward your 10 devices.
Account and billing
Manage or cancel in the app: Settings, Account, Plan, Manage.
How do I switch plans, update my card or get invoices?
In the app, go to Settings > Account > Plan > Manage. Stripe's billing page opens in your browser, where you can switch between monthly and yearly, update your card, download invoices or cancel.
Can I cancel any time?
Yes. Cancel in the app under Settings > Account > Plan > Manage and you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for. You won't be charged again.
What happens when my trial ends?
The VPN and Smart DNS stop until you choose a plan. Nothing is charged, because the trial doesn't take a card. To keep using them, pick monthly ($6.99) or yearly ($49.99) in Settings > Account > Upgrade to Pro.
How many devices can I use?
Up to 10 PCs and routers on one account.
What do you log?
We don't record the content of your traffic or the websites you visit. We keep what we need to run the service: your account, your devices and a record of each session (when it started and ended, the device, relay and server region, and how much data it moved). Smart DNS stores the home IP address you authorize, because the relays need it. The privacy policy has the full list.
Troubleshooting
The app says the Lagvolt service isn't installed
The tunnel runs in a Windows service that the installer sets up. Press Install service under the power button and say yes when Windows asks for permission. If that fails, reinstall Lagvolt.
The app says the Lagvolt service isn't running
Press the power button: Lagvolt starts the service itself. If it still won't start, press Install service and say yes when Windows asks for permission.
I didn't get a sign-in code
Look in your spam or junk folder for an email whose subject is the code followed by "is your Lagvolt code". Check the address you typed, then press Resend code (it unlocks after 30 seconds). You can ask for 5 codes in 10 minutes. You can also sign in with Discord or Google.
My sign-in code didn't work
Codes expire after 10 minutes and allow 5 tries. Each new code cancels the ones before it, so use the newest email. If it has expired, press Resend code.
Do I need administrator rights?
To install and to update. The installer sets up the Windows service that runs the tunnel, and that needs administrator rights. Day to day, Lagvolt runs like any other app. Windows also asks if the service has to be reinstalled.
Lagvolt won't connect
The app shows a message that says why. The usual ones: the relay didn't answer (try another relay, or check your internet connection), no relay is free for that server region right now, or your trial has ended. If it keeps happening, email us the exact message.
Smart DNS stopped working
Your home IP address has probably changed. Open the Console page in the app and authorize Smart DNS again. If you've turned Smart DNS off or signed out, set the console's DNS back to Automatic.
How do I uninstall Lagvolt?
From Windows Settings, under Apps, like any other app. That also removes the Lagvolt service, and the WireGuard driver if nothing else uses it.
